One Planet Cities are prosperous cities

To meet the needs of rising urban populations, In the next four decades humanity must create as much infrastructure as they've built so far throughout recorded history. Trillions of dollars will be needed to invest in urban infrastructure development, upgrades, and maintenance.

To meet the Paris Agreement’s goal of keeping global warming to the safe limit of 1.5°C this infrastructure needs to be both low carbon and resilient. Otherwise, we spiral the world toward uncontrolled climate change. Ignoring this risk could undo the economic progress made globally since World War II, according to the IPCC.

WWF works globally with city planners, entrepreneurs and innovators and the finance sector to ensure that needed infrastructure investments are also sustainable and 1.5°C compatible solutions. We help match cities with investors. We champion the testing of new and innovative finance models. We work to shape leading-edge policy. Here are the key areas where we are focusing our efforts:
