The Alliance for a Just Energy Transformation is an inclusive, voluntary initiative that aims to catalyse a shared understanding and drive action to transform the energy system.
By identifying and addressing the gaps in energy transition frameworks, policies and measures - and taking into account different national, local and sectoral contexts - it aims to ensure energy transitions are successfully implemented by putting nature, communities, workers and all peoples at the centre, leaving no one behind.
The global energy system is the leading cause of the climate crisis - primarily driven by fossil fuels, which are responsible for around 81% of global CO2 emissions. Sustainable energy transitions offer a massive opportunity for social justice and to achieve our development goals.
But this shift requires energy transitions to be people-centred, renewables- and nature based, equitable and inclusive, contributing to a global just transformation of the energy system.
The Alliance will help advance inclusive, people-centred dialogue with communities, civil society, policymakers, and the private sector to find common ground and ensure this huge, critical transformation is just and sustainable.

This paper provides guidance and recommendations to support governments in integrating just energy transitions into updated NDCs by 2025.
The paper also proposes a matrix model to describe what is needed to deliver just energy transitions. The model combines UNDP’s framework with AJET’s core principles for just energy transformation.

Energy transitions and social justice questions are intrinsically linked, and the paper identifies the different elements that must pull together and integrate to enable successful energy transitions that deliver on the Sustainable Development Goals.
