Alliance for a Just Energy Transformation

The Alliance for a Just Energy Transformation is an inclusive, voluntary initiative that aims to catalyse a shared understanding and drive action to transform the energy system.

By identifying and addressing the gaps in energy transition frameworks, policies and measures - and taking into account different national, local and sectoral contexts - it aims to ensure energy transitions are successfully implemented by putting nature, communities, workers and all peoples at the centre, leaving no one behind.

The global energy system is the leading cause of the climate crisis - primarily driven by fossil fuels, which are responsible for around 81% of global CO2 emissions. Sustainable energy transitions offer a massive opportunity for social justice and to achieve our development goals.

But this shift requires energy transitions to be people-centred, renewables- and nature based, equitable and inclusive, contributing to a global just transformation of the energy system.

The Alliance will help advance inclusive, people-centred dialogue with communities, civil society, policymakers, and the private sector to find common ground and ensure this huge, critical transformation is just and sustainable.

Core Principles of the Alliance for a Just Energy Transformation
The core principles for energy transitions that deliver a Just Energy Transformation are elaborated in the Alliance Statement. Energy transitions must:
  1. Be fair; protect the rights and needs of everyone, and respect values, without privileging any one group over another.
  2. Ensure climate and energy justice.
  3. Deliver energy access and development.
  4. Be comprehensive, coherent and transparent.
  5. Include clearly defined, robust and inclusive stakeholder engagement and social dialogue.
  6. Ensure justice, transparent decision-making and access to reliable information for all people impacted by energy transitions.
  7. Be sustainable, ambitious and consistent.
  8. Be science-based.

Joining The Alliance

The Alliance is an inclusive, voluntary initiative, open to any organisation who endorses and commits to uphold the principles and practices within the Alliance Statement and these terms of reference.

  2. What they believe they can contribute to the AJET.
  3. What resources and knowledge they can bring to the AJET.
  4. How their existing work is relevant to AJET goals and objectives.
  5. How their organisation aligns with AJET principles and practices as set out in the Alliance Statement.
Acceptance of a new member is by consensus of the members, which is deemed achieved if no objections or further concerns are received within 10 days of your responses to the above questions being shared with the members. Members are expected to:

The Alliance aims to be as broad and diverse as possible and aims for participation from, among others, multilateral development banks and financial institutions; institutional investors; intergovernmental organisations and agencies; private utilities and energy companies; social partners, including trade unions; civil society organisations; representative organisations of municipalities, territories, or other public authorities and representative organisations of indigenous groups. The Alliance is also open to observers in certain circumstances. Please contact the coordinator for more information.

WWF's discussion paper makes the case for implementing the ‘just energy transformation’.

Energy transitions and social justice questions are intrinsically linked, and the paper identifies the different elements that must pull together and integrate to enable successful energy transitions that deliver on the Sustainable Development Goals.
