COP26 delivered outcomes reflecting the stark reality of collective climate ambition and finance. With COP27 in Egypt, 2022 is a crucial year for the MENA region to explore their role in closing the ambition gap on mitigation and adaptation to ensure countries are collectively on track for 1.5°C; and in closing the credibility gap, ensuring long and short term pledges and action are also in line.

This event discussed mitigation and adaptation activities in the MENA region. It explored NDC pledges in the region and opportunities to close the ambition gap including transformative nature-based solutions; and highlight opportunities for regional and national (and global) leadership.

This event follows parallel events at LAC, Africa and AP Regional Climate Weeks which discussed the opportunities in each region and showcased the best practice in NDC enhancement.

Even as we begin to emerge from under the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic, Africa is on the front line of the crises in climate and nature. The ability of African governments to respond to climate change, by building resilience and adapting to the impacts we are already seeing, is limited. But the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) that governments are required to revise ahead of this year’s COP26 climate talks provide an opportunity to seek support to build that capacity.

Governments, civil society, private sector and the donor community are all engaged in these issues as we approach COP26. This WWF event at the Regional Climate Week in Africa provided a chance to bring actors together to discuss the opportunities and challenges for NDC ambition and action in Africa; and how this process can help people, nature and the climate.

2021 is a crucial year for dealing with the climate and biodiversity crises, rising inequalities and COVID 19. WWF has produced guidance for decision-makers in enhancing Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) in Asia Pacific Region, based on WWF’s #NDCsWeWant checklist, which was launched at this event.

The event explored to what extent Asia Pacific NDCs reflect necessary ambition and the role for decision-makers in fostering highest ambition in the face of multiple development challenges. It discussed opportunities for regional, national leadership and the role of non-state actors in supporting NDC development and implementation.

2021 is a crucial yet challenging year for raising ambition to tackle the climate and biodiversity crises. This event explored to what extent Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) from countries in Latin America and the Caribbean reflect the necessary ambition for limiting global warming to 1.5°C and in reaching a net-zero resilient world by 2050.

The discussion covered the lessons learned for countries yet to submit and the role for decision-makers in fostering highest ambition in the face of multiple development challenges, including the climate and nature crises and COVID-19.
